ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories produce technology not found anywhere else in the Nation
and the world. Instead of using this technology in New Mexico to produce good jobs, our State is the 15th
highest exporter of technology.
Our Nation has experienced the best and longest economic growth over the last 50 years. New Mexico has been last -- 50th and 48th in per capita earnings for the last 30 years. Our challenge is to bring and create jobs in New Mexico by retaining jobs and industry in our country so that we can bring these jobs to our state. Child care for working parents and their children must be provided by the private sector and business. Government can participate in this important goal by making schools available and by supporting child care with tax incentives. Businesses must be given tax incentives to start and move jobs to New Mexico. Technology from Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia must be used to create jobs in our state. These national labs must be required to train our citizens for the transfer of their technology to the private sector. N.M. must have venture capital and tax incentives to prevent technology going out of state to create jobs elsewhere. Nearly 250,000 skilled workers from foreign countries are allowed to enter the U.S. and work here. The State of New Mexico hired foreign workers in 1999. I am committed to bring these jobs to N.M. Our state needs better education, training, good paying jobs and child care. Two-thirds of women working have a 6 year-old or younger child. For every $1 earned by a man, an Anglo woman earns $.27 less, a Black woman $.37 less and a Hispanic woman $.47 less. Husbands and wives, men and women are harmed by this inequity. © Committee to Elect Francesca Lobato
