About the New Mexico Youth at Risk Foundation
NMYAR's community mentoring program produces extraordinary results in the lives of middle school students. Our Community Partners for Youth program provides support structures for young people, focusing on helping them take responsibility for their actions, succeed in school and achieve life goals. NMYAR volunteers specialize in literacy development, behavior intervention, redirection and prevention of criminal and gang activities, and reducing substance and alcohol abuse, as well as other counter-productive behaviors. The program is highly structured, and includes workshops, seminars, and activities geared toward helping youth participants take responsibility for their lives.

NMYAR Organization
Created in 1988 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 community-based, volunteer organization, our mission is to give young people the tools necessary to become responsible for their lives and actions. We modeled our programs in accordance with the National Breakthrough Foundation. We are affiliated with Global Partners for Youth (GPY), an international organization of communities in the US, Puerto Rico and Europe that provides similar programs to at risk youth. There are currently 15 active GPY affiliate programs in the US and Puerto Rico alone. NMYAR shares curriculum, personnel and other resources with other GPY partners. Our program leaders attend the GPY Leadership Institute for professional training.

Our organization has grown in many ways since its inception. In 1995 we graduated fifteen middle school students. In 1997, we graduated seventeen at risk eighth graders. These young people were referred to our program by middle school administrators. Initially, we retained outside consultants to train the mentors, volunteers and youth. By 1999, we graduated 14 students from Washington Middle School. NMYAR trained the mentors and volunteers ourselves. All three programs were done without a paid staff, relying solely on the dedicated service of volunteers.
