| Election 2000: Educating the Next Generation
While some adults express fatigue and frustration with the current election, the events seem to have energized the next generation of voters. Recount fever is speading in classrooms across the country. Who would have throught that politics could have been so captivating to kids? This election, stranger than fiction to many adults, is proving to be a golden opportunity to bring current events to life for our nation's youth. Teachers note that for kids, this seemingly tumultuous election, is exciting. They see the election unfold. They see how a person's vote really does matter. Our national constitution as well as the various state laws become more than just pieces of old, justy paper. Our children seem to know that they are witnessing a very special part of American history. Claudia Wallis, managing editor,Time for Kids, believes that those who are old enough to watch and learn from Election 2000 will become a special generation of voters. Wallis adds that this group will understand the Electoral College, the various election rules, and recognize the importance of participating in the election process better than any generation of this century. One sixth grade class (Illustration B at right) is so captivated by this election that they are sending a series of emails to their representatives in Washington. The main thrust of their message -- get organized! Kids do say the "darndest things..." As shown in Illustration C, the students' concensus about this election is that the process is "very disorganized." They add that, "We think that voting polls/ballots should be more understandable and organized. From what we know people were confused and didn't know who they were voting for. There should be a simpler type of ballot..." This sixth grade class echoes the sentiments of many Americans. It's refreshing to see such insight from tomorrow's leaders. We're in good hands.
