CONCERNS FOR THE DEAF
and HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITY
Ever since late in 2003, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) protested against a decision by the U. S. Department of Education to remove 200 television programs from their list of shows to be captioned. The dispute affected 28 million deaf and hard of hearing individuals, depriving them of access to the same shows as everyone else in America. The NAD urged President Bush to overturn this decision.

The National Council on Disabilities (NCD) Chair Lex Frieden and nine members of Congress urged Department of Education Secretary Roderick Page to reverse censorship of captioned television programs.

PUBLISHERíS NOTE: I contacted the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) for the most recent update on whether President George Bush has overturned the censorship decision or not. At the time of this publication, I have not received any response yet. This along with the fact that this update has not been posted on the NAD website leads me to believe that the decision has not been overturned yet.
