The 2000 presidential election was disrupted due to balloting problems in Florida After several legal challenges and recounting of ballots, the United States Supreme Court intervened and with a 5-4 vote, ordered the recount halted and decreed George Bush the new president of United States.
After inauguration, President George Bush decided on limited federal funding for stem cell research.
Several corporate scandals erupted, exposing corporate greed. One of them was Enron, whose scandal embarrassed Bush as he was friends with the Enron C.E.O., Kenneth Lay, whom Bush referred to as Kenny Boy.
The Department of Justice cut back on budget for its terrorism department, claiming that the funds were needed for other purposes, such as prosecution of abortion clinics and doctors who performed abortions.

The United States invaded Afghanistan as it was a stronghold of the Taliban, a group protecting Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. It was hoped that bin Laden would be captured, but this had not happened so far.
