In your ten o'clock broadcast you stated approximately 75 Dog Owners participated in a city-sponsored policy meeting tonight concerning Canine Free Zones. You reported Dog Owners would be happy to have three or four dog parks where the city would allow their canine companions to play, exercise and socialize -- off leash.

As one of the Dog Owners present at that meeting, I would like to announce officially I am not happy with such a proposal. I would not look forward to a city requirement forcing me to travel each day to one of three or four possible sites in this city. We have enough traffic on our congested city streets.

Most of the Dog Owners present at tonight's meeting stated they wanted a dog park near their home -- very near their home. This will not be possible if the city offers only three or four sites.

I am sad the present city dog policy makes me a criminal. I heard many Dog Owners echo this sentiment tonight. Yet, each day I visit a neighborhood park and exercise my two pups. How many times has your news station reported a negative story about Dog Owners like me and their dogs who romp illegally in our city facilities? Check the statistics. You, I and other Albuquerque residents are more likely to be injured by a teenager than a dog.

Nevertheless, we do not force our children into fenced play areas. We try to teach our children to behave safely, responsibly and maturely. Of course, your news station reports too frequently the number of times we have failed with our children.

And as you are probably aware, there are fewer mishaps from dogs under the supervision of their owners while recreating in our city parks than from yard dogs, watchdogs or neglected creatures. The people characterized as Dog Owners, those sufficiently committed to their canine companions such that they take them to parks, are generally responsible "parents."

No, Dog Owners will not be happy with just three or four dog parks. There are other alternatives. I would be happy to provide you further information.
