Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores, as shown above, measure the burden of care required for a patient entering and leaving a rehabilitation setting. Lower FIM scores indicate a higher level of dependence upon a caregiver for basic activities of daily living, bowel and bladder, mobility, communication and cognition.
