Standings are based on a point system that was created more than 20 years ago and rewards runners based on the importance of each event they compete in, plus how many other top competitors they beat in that race. Finishing times are irrelevant. Beginning this year we have made an important modification. In the past, at the start of each season, all athletes points were set to zero and then accumulated throughout the year. Now we are maintaining the points earned through the past 12 months, to better reflect each road runner's current state of competitiveness. Asmae Leghzaoui made a big jump by finishing second in the World's Best 10K, a race in which she didn't score any points last year.
